Music Monday: The Band
by Matt Goold
I’ve been a fan of The Band for a while now, they’ve been one of those bands that get more exciting the more I listen to them and learn about them. They’ve got such a ripe history that makes them incredibly interesting and, on a much more basic level, they just made some serious jams. They’re also masters of subtlety, which allows for them to be listened to and appreciated for years.
With the passing of Levon Helm, I sort of went into a Band frenzy and was listening to anything and everything, most of which was revolving around the soundtrack to The Last Waltz, their 1976 concert which was intended to be a bit of a “last hurrah” for them. Not that their studio recorded material doesn’t translate their essence, because I think it does, but their live recordings convey that essence much quicker and easier.
One of my favorite, and I believe one of the best things about The Band is that there is no star, nor is there a lead. Song writing, singing, and instrumentation is all shared. They just took everything they had to work with and molded it for each song to make it as good as they could. And that’s awesome.
